Washington

The Connecticut Community Foundation is very proud of our partnerships with the Washington community and our role in helping nonprofits and students flourish with a variety of grants and scholarships.

People

• John Millington became a member of the CCF Board of Trustees in 2008. He has particular interest in conservation and environmental groups and issues. John served as a chairman of the After School Arts Program (ASAP) in Washington Depot, a program established by CCF.
   
• Ann M. Burton is former president of CCF where she also served as chairman of the Grants Committee and established the Environmental Committee. 
   
• Kay Abella received CCF’s first volunteer award at our 2009 annual meeting. The award recognized Kay’s tremendous service to CCF as an NAI Advisor, member of the NAI Committee, and speaker at many of our events including several talks on her book, “Fighting Castro: A Love Story”. Luis Abella also has served CCF as a member of the Development Committee and the Professional Advisors Committee.
   
• Linda Allard and Carolyn Setlow respectively serve on CCF’s LitLinks and Grants Committees.

Community Leadership  

• As a part of the LitLinks early childhood education initiative, Regional School District 12 received a third-year $2,320 grant in 2011. LitLinks aims to improve preschoolers' readiness for kindergarten by better aligning preschool and kindergarten education through joint teacher training, seminars, parent outreach, and other efforts.
   

Grants

• Judea Garden (St. John’s Episcopal Church of Washington) received a $2,500 grant for their Planting and Harvesting Efficiency Improvement Plan to provide fresh local produce to neighbors in need. This grant will extend the growing season from early spring to late fall, providing a longer period of assistance to those in need.
   
• The Northwest Conservation District for Energy Conservation, Efficiency, and Renewable Energy received a grant for a new, expanded program targeted to residents, town energy committees, and schools to increase clean, efficient and renewable energy. Washington was one of 13 towns receiving a combined total of $9,500 in grants through this program.
   
• New Opportunities, Inc. currently has a $9,000 Money Management grant for Elder Enhancement which provides one-on-one financial literacy assistance to seniors to seven new communities including Washington.
   
• In 2010, the Washington Arts Association received a $1,482 grant to provide hardware and software for administrative work and marketing graphics.

Sponsorships

• CCF provided a 2011 sponsorship to the Gunn Memorial Library and Museum for its 4th annual Washington Green Cemetery Tour.
   
• The Institute for American Indian Studies received a sponsorship for its 5th Annual Green Corn Festival, focusing on the importance of corn to the Native Americans and celebrating the first corn of the season.
   

Scholarships

• In 2011, CCF awarded Washington area students $11,047 in scholarships including: Carley Davenport, Theodore P. Alex, Matthew Griffith, Jesse Steinmetz, Kelsey Rogers & Sarah Swanson. Awards come from a variety of scholarships available to many students in the 21 town area served by CCF.
