New Milford

The Connecticut Community Foundation is very proud of our partnerships with the New Milford community and our role in helping nonprofits and students flourish with a variety of grants and scholarships.

People

• Charles Barlow became involved with CCF in 2002 when he established the Charles Beach Barlow Charitable Trust, a designated fund to benefit the New Milford Historical Society. His knowledge of local people and places, his 18th century home on the village green, and his family’s deep roots with organizations he supports make him truly connected to the town.
   
• Fred Baker and Lisa Powers established the Powers-Baker Fund to support our regional grantmaking abilities. Fred served as president of CCF from 2004-2006, and as chairman of the Grants Committee. Lisa is a former chair of the Events Committee.

Community Leadership

• As part of our leadership efforts in early education, CCF brought together educators, parents, caregivers, and community leaders at a Community Conversation to explore how the New Milford School District can address the need for a improved transitions from preschool to kindergarten. 
  
  The Community Conversation resulted in the creation of the Greater New Milford Early Childhood Council, bringing together public school teachers, parents, libraries and others to strengthen children’s literacy skills.
   

Grants

• New Milford Visiting Nurse Association, Inc. received a $4,000 grant for Senior Health Promotion to offer health assessment visits to 28 isolated seniors and then connect them to other services.
   
• Literacy Volunteers of Greater Waterbury received a $4,950 grant for their Workforce Readiness Program to provide an updated Workforce Readiness program for halfway house residents and adults enrolled in Literacy Volunteer classes.
   
• Community Culinary School of NW CT Culinary Program received a $15,000 grant to support program/staffing costs for four full sessions of training for the unemployed and underemployed with the goal of expanding the earned-income catering effort. 
   
• New Opportunities, Inc. currently has a $9,000 Money Management grant for Elder Enhancement, providing one-on-one financial literacy assistance to seniors to seven new communities including New Milford.
    
• CCF awarded Theatreworks of New Milford $9K from NAI to hire a consultant to assist with fund development projects.

Sponsorships

• CCF provided a sponsorship to Creative Arts Center aka TheatreWorks of New Milford 'Pay What you Want Night' 2011. 
   
• CCF sponsored the Pratt Nature Center’s Earth Day 2011, an entertaining and interactive celebration serving to raise community awareness with a goal to promote the importance of preserving our natural resources.

Scholarships

• In 2011, CCF awarded New Milford area students $22,750 in scholarships including: Gabrielle Gaynor,Alexandra Goetjen, Andrea Keller, Amanda Groccia, Anastasia Kouloganes, Maria Del Carmen Paredes, Nirma Rizvic, Matthew Roberti, Carly Strelez, Corinne M. Sullivan, Michael Vita and Elizabeth Hawley.
