Naugatuck

The Connecticut Community Foundation is very proud of our partnerships with the Naugatuck community and our role in helping nonprofits and students flourish with a variety of grants and scholarships.

People

• In 1923, Naugatuck resident Emmett A. Saunders established a trust to benefit his family and his communities. When the last beneficiary died in 2004, a portion of the remaining assets was distributed to the Borough of Naugatuck.
  
  In 2008, the Mayor and the Burgesses of the Borough transfered these assets to establish the Saunders Fund for the Sick and Infirm of the Borough of Naugatuck, a permanent advised fund of nearly $2 million with CCF. 
  
  An advisory committee of Naugatuck residents annually recommends grants to agencies and nonprofits that provide care for the sick and infirm of Naugatuck. 
   
• In 2010, Naugatuck's Kevin DelGobbo was elected to the CCF Board of Trustees.  Kevin is Commissioner of the Connecticut Public Utility Control Authority.
   
• President of Naugatuck Savings Bank, Mark Yanarella, and his wife, Nichol, a retired school teacher in Naugatuck, are very active in the Naugatuck community. Mark is a former member of the CCF Board of Trustees, and together, the couple established the Mark C. and Nichol S. Yanarella Fund, an advised fund at CCF.
   
• The Salem Foundation transferred its assets to CCF in May of 1997. Founded in 1953 by the late Harris Whittemore, Jr., then chairman of Lewis Engineering, the Salem Foundation Fund, an advised fund, has provided funding for capital projects and special requests particularly for the Whittemore Public Library and other Naugatuck institutions. 

Community Leadership

• As a part of CCF's LitLinks early childhood education initiative, Naugatuck Discovery received a $10K grant in 2010 for the preschool/kindergarten peer mentorship program.  LitLinks aims to improve preschoolers' readiness for kindergarten by better aligning preschool and kindergarten education through joint teacher training, seminars, parent outreach, and other efforts.

Grants

• CCF awarded the Whittemore Memorial Library $45K in 2008 for a full replacement of the rotunda skylight and associated ornamental sheetmetal work.
   
• In 2009, CCF provided the Naugatuck High School Chamber Singers with $5K for a 9-day tour of Spain with concert performances.
   
• CCF gave Naugatuck Continuing Education a $2,500 grant to expand English as a Second Language (ESL) classes for adults.
   
• The Naugatuck Family YMCA received a 3 year, $40K grant from CCF toward the capital campaign for building improvements.

Sponsorships

• CCF has a long-standing relationship with the Naugatuck Teen Theatre, which most recently received a sponsorship for their 2010 Spring Musical.

Scholarships

• In 2010, Naugatuck resident, Shohana Jannat received the Jack and Vivian Hanson Scholarship.
   
• Naugatuck resident, Kelsea Mucherino was awarded the 2010 Carl J. Niedziel Memorial Scholarship, an award for members of the CT State Police Credit Union and their immediate family members.
   

Partner Funders

• CCF provides grantmaking services, program expertise and administrative support to partner funders including Naugatuck Savings Bank Foundation.  In late 2009, NSBF provided Neighborhood Housing Services of Waterbury with a $15K grant for their Help for Homeowners program, helping hundreds of financially at-risk families develop the best plan for keeping their homes in the economic recession.
