Andersen Sisters of Southbury Continue Family Legacy With $3.6M in Gifts to Scholarship Fund
WATERBURY, CT—March 16, 2011—The Elizabeth H. Andersen and Nina E. Andersen Scholarship Fund at the Connecticut Community Foundation (CCF) recently received gifts totaling more than $3.6 million from the estates of Elizabeth and Nina Andersen of Southbury. The Elizabeth H. Andersen and Nina E. Andersen Scholarship Fund awards scholarships to students in CCF’s 21-town service area in Greater Waterbury and the Litchfield Hills.
“In leaving such generous gifts, Elizabeth and Nina not only ensured the continuation of their family’s legacy but the continuation of providing help to students in our region for many years to come,” said Ingrid Manning, CCF CEO.
With these gifts, the Foundation’s assets reached $74 million.
Sisters Nina and Elizabeth Andersen of Heritage Village in Southbury gave generously to establish the unrestricted scholarship fund in 1994 with a gift matched by the Reader’s Digest Foundation. The two formerly lived in New York City where Nina worked for Mutual of New York and Elizabeth worked for Reader’s Digest. Both greatly enjoyed world travel.
The fund is designated for students entering their freshman year of college at a four-year school with an objective of enabling students to attend the school of their choice. Students are eligible to receive an award for up to four consecutive years. Recent recipients attend schools such as Fairfield University, New York University, University of Connecticut, University of Maine, Providence College, and Cornell University.
In 2010, CCF, the region’s largest scholarship provider, awarded more than $600,000 in scholarships from funds established by area donors.
