Dr. Raymond R. Gamby of Southbury Leaves His Legacy With Scholarship Fund at the CT Community Foundation

Estate Adds Nearly $400K to Fund

WATERBURY, CT – June 4, 2010 – The Dr. Raymond R. Gamby Scholarship Fund at the Connecticut Community Foundation recently received a gift of nearly $400,000 from the estate of Dr. Raymond R. Gamby.

“By including his scholarship fund in his will, Dr. Gamby created a legacy that will help students in our area forever.” said Ingrid Manning, CEO of the Connecticut Community Foundation, the region’s largest scholarship provider.

Dr. Gamby served on the Scholarship Committee at the Foundation for six years. In 2000, he established the Dr. Raymond R. Gamby Scholarship Fund at the Foundation with a gift of $2,000 in memory of his mother Amelia Gamby. He designated the fund to provide scholarships to students in our region who are of Italian or French descent, are academically outstanding, and plan to attend undergraduate school.

Dr. Gamby, who lived in Southbury with his wife Doris when he died in 2009, enjoyed a 27-year career as an educator around the world. He managed five orphanages for the Christian Children’s Fund in Hong Kong, taught at Hailie Selassi First University in Ethiopia as associate professor, and the American College of Switzerland as professor. The State Department and University of Pittsburgh jointly appointed him professor of business and international affairs at Ahmadu Bello University in Nigeria. Back in the United States, he was a professor and dean at Detroit Institute of Technology, and was dean and professor of the business school at Post College in Waterbury.
