Area Students First Recipients of Community College Scholarship Program

December 9, 2009 – Twenty-one area students who entered Naugatuck Valley Community College for the first time this fall recently received scholarships from the newly-established Community College Scholarship Program offered by the Connecticut Community Foundation in Waterbury.

Students were both current high school graduates and adults returning to school. They are pursuing studies in many professional areas including nursing, physical therapy, computer information systems, drafting, and elementary education. Others have chosen a liberal arts curriculum. Several of the returning students had lost their jobs or wanted to improve their careers.

“It is very important to support students looking to attend our local community colleges,” said Jack Baker, a trustee of the Connecticut Community Foundation. “These students will become more skilled and educated members of our local work force and become higher wage earners for their families. In these tough economic times it is even more important to make scholarships available to those eager to learn.”

The region’s largest scholarship provider, The Connecticut Community Foundation started the Community College Scholarship Program in 2009 to better meet the needs of area students seeking scholarships.

Major funding to establish the Community College Scholarship Program was generously donated by Timex Group USA, Inc. in Middlebury, an anonymous donor, and other individual and corporate donors.
