Learning Law Helps Seniors Breathe Easier
Connecticut Community Foundation grant: $5,000
“Overwhelming” might describe the legal and financial issues seniors face.
Long-term health care, prescription drug costs, and wills and estates are complex enough. Add worries about housing and consumer fraud and things are even more complicated. Imagine tackling these issues without having the facts you need to make life-altering decisions.
There is a better way. With support from the Connecticut Community Foundation, the Connecticut Appleseed Center for Law and Justice provided free workshops about legal issues at local senior centers.
Seniors received reliable, strictly noncommercial information from qualified attorneys who volunteered their time. Seniors who attended took home a reference book and the relief of being better prepared to face tough issues.
“I think this is vitally important,” said Dawn Horgan, a frequent visitor to the Prospect Senior Center, which hosted the workshops. “So many people don’t have any good advice about legal issues. There’s a lot of misinformation out there.”
